We spoke with Mr. Greenberg’s father, Maurice R. “Hank” Greenberg, the legend who transformed an obscure property-casualty company into the behemoth American International Group Inc., during nearly four decades before his exit in 2005.

Here are edited excerpts from our conversation with the elder Mr. Greenberg, who is now building another insurance and investment conglomerate, Starr Cos.

Wall Street Journal: What do you think of the way he’s built up ACE?

Mr. Greenberg: “Look, we have a rule: When our family gets together, we don’t talk about our business. ... I don’t think it is appropriate that we talk about business.”

WSJ: Do you cross paths now in your business travels?

Mr. Greenberg: “Periodically we meet in China. There’s a fairly broad meeting that I go to every year. ... He doesn’t check in with me. We might meet in the fitness center. We may sit near each other, nothing untoward.”

WSJ: What lessons did you seek to impart to Evan during the 25 years he worked at AIG, from 1975 to 2000?

Mr. Greenberg:  “He’s my son. He obviously inherited some of the characteristics that I have, and he worked in the company for many years. You learn something when you’re doing that. He didn’t learn bad habits. ....

“I think Evan saw the international side as important. I had him work in Japan for a period. He traveled many times with me.  I’ve been involved in international issues, not just insurance issues, but foreign-policy issues, for years and years, helped open markets that weren’t opened...

They may not have liked it at the time, I’m sure, but I didn’t think it would be right to give them more leeway than anybody else.”“

WSJ:  Regarding Evan’s departure from AIG, some people tell us he needed to find his own platform. What do you think?

Mr. Greenberg:  “That’s exactly what a great company [like AIG at the time] should do: It’s a training ground, and individuals have their own aspirations and they should fulfill them.”

WSJ: Was it disappointing to you when Evan left?

Mr. Greenberg: “I was unhappy to have him leave, obviously, but he’s his own person. He had to do what he wanted to do. He had to follow his own desires....

“I think [the bad blood allegedly created between Mr. Greenberg and Evan] was overdramatized [by the media]. He’s my son. I’m his father.  I don’t know anybody [whose] father-son relationship runs smoothly without ever having a difference. ...

“In any event, Evan is doing a great job. He’s learned a great deal. He’s matured. He’s grown. He’s certainly one of the outstanding people in the insurance industry.  I’m very proud of that obviously. I’m very proud of all my four children.”
